The Necroscope books were a major inspiration for the series as early as Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (Dyack indicated so in a 2016 interview) and clearly Crystal Dynamics took some inspiration from them for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver as well. The Necroscope books are politically sometimes problematic, sometimes ridiculous (there's some incredibly Mary Sue main characters) but they are quick, easy, efficient, spectacular reads, and full of extraordinary ideas. Quickly, the spies come in contact with the Wamphyri, creatures born from the unholy union between a The Thing-like proteiform parasite and a human being, which further evolve into powerful monsters, devilish and immortal humanoids reigning over large territories. Telepathic, psychometric, chronokinetic spies. Necroscope is a long series of science-fiction/horror novels situated during the Cold War, and describing the opposition between the "psionic" branches of various secret services around the world.
